When to audit your app stack
Audit your app stack if your monthly app spend is above $500, if you have more than 15 active apps, if you have not reviewed apps in the last 90 days, or if a developer has flagged performance issues.
Common warning signs
- Multiple apps doing the same job (e.g. two review apps, two upsell apps)high
- Apps installed for a campaign or test that are still running months laterhigh
- App cost is growing faster than revenuehigh
- No one on the team knows what some apps actually domedium
- Site speed has degraded as app count has grownmedium
- Some apps have not been opened or checked in 30+ daysmedium
Audit checklist
- Export a list of all installed apps with their monthly cost and install datehigh
- For each app, note the job it does (one sentence)high
- Flag any duplicates — two or more apps solving the same problemhigh
- For each duplicate set, identify which to keep and which to removehigh
- Review apps not opened in 90 days — mark for removal unless essentialmedium
- Check if any platform-native features now cover what a paid app is doingmedium
- Calculate annual cost before and after proposed removalsmedium
- Check uninstall impact — some apps leave code snippets; use a developer to clean upmedium
- Set a reminder to repeat this audit every 90 dayslow
Questions to ask before removing an app
- 1Is this app generating measurable revenue or saving measurable time?
- 2Does any other app or platform feature already cover this?
- 3If this app disappeared overnight, would anyone notice within 24 hours?
- 4Does the app have scripts or theme edits that need to be cleaned up on removal?
- 5Has the app been reviewed in the last 90 days?
